3 pounds of insanity

Nearly a month since my last post. I’ve been laid low with a filthy virus plus a sinus infection. I was off work for over a week! Even since the hols started I’ve done nothing but sleep. I’ve dreaded getting on the scales and have put it off day after day with one excuse or another – it’s later than my usual weigh-in time so it won’t count; I’ll weight myself tomorrow after we’ve had cream tea today; it’s the wrong day of the week to start a new plan – FFS!!!! Also, if I didn’t know how much weight I’d put on, it wasn’t really real, and I could kid myself that going out for cocktails wouldn’t matter at all. In the end, in utter disgust with myself, I made a plan for hubby to weigh me, but not tell me what the scales said, so that I wouldn’t have to face how far I’d fallen and deal with all the negative self-talk, but when I did lose weight, I’d be able to find out where I’d started from. Brilliant, eh? The things we do to ourselves. But we both slept till lunchtime the next day. So still in glorious ignorance, it was Indian takeaway for dinner last night.

Then today, I had to get up early to go fill a prescription. Hubby was still in bed and I figured, what the heck, I’m an adult, I need to take responsibility for my actions. And whatever the scales say, I’m still a worthwhile and lovable person, and I need to be able to separate the two. And amazingly, it wasn’t as bad as I’d expected. I mean, it wasn’t great. Fifteen stone eleven point six (221.6 pounds), but still a gain of only around 4 or 5 pounds over the last few weeks, and still short of 16 stone – that horrible number that I began from. I think I would have cried if it was over 16 stone (224) – all that effort wasted. Instead, it was like a weight lifting, if you’ll pardon the expression. But as I type this, I realise, that for another three pounds, the way I feel about this would have been completely different. If that isn’t crazy I don’t know what is.

But I feel enthused and liberated. I did my weekly shop today, with lots of healthy food. No plan – just healthy eating. And I tried out one of my xmas presents – an African dance workout DVD. Had to stop a few times and gave up after 30 mins, but it’s 30 more minutes than I’ve done in a few weeks. And then I got on the treadmill. My CV fitness has really taken a nosedive and I want to build that up, so intervals intervals intervals. Did 10 mins alternating at a jog for as long as possible, walk to recover, then repeat. Didn’t get very far – 0.93 kilometers. Then a five minute cool-down. When I increase that distance by a third, to 1.24km in 10 mins, I’ll add five mins to the session. Daily. That’s the plan. A minimum of 30 minutes of something fun, then 15 mins intervals. Everyday. I know I should be lifting, but I’m just not in the mood, so I’m gonna try and mix it up and do lots of fun things, not necessarily following a plan. But 45 minutes a day should certainly get my lungs working again. I hope.

Well, I’ve been weighing during my holiday gain, but it sure hasn’t been pretty, even though I know a lot of what I saw was water, as I was barely drinking any and eating a lot of carbs. Some has since dropped off, but I’m not yet within two pounds of my low weight. My Hacker’s Diet graph is shameful looking. Exercise has bottomed out, i.e. no actual gym stuff recently, though I still think 5 hours of tree decorating and cat tree erecting should count!

I was on my feet so much during the holidays that they are toast AND both knees are real painful lately. Sort of dreading taking the tree down again, but at least I can rest a day or so now before that chore. Just want to play with my kitties!
