Is fat your fate – mark 2

I hate to admit it but all those new starts in the last few weeks (months?) have amounted to nought – less than nought actually, as this morning, on official weigh day, I clocked in at 14 stone 5.2, or 201.2 pounds. I said I’d never go over 200 pounds again and I can’t believe I’ve let it slide this badly. I know what to do, it’s just consistency that lets me down – the one thing that makes a real difference between success and failure. Just doing it regularly.

I’m going back to basics. Back to where this new BBG started in January 2009, a stone and a half heavier than I am now. It was an article in Self magazine, titled “Is Fat Your Fate?” along with a 10-question quiz. You can take the quiz online here.

When I first took the quiz in 2009, I scored an impressive minus three points, out of a maximum possible twenty. Needless to say, this was the worst category. I set myself the goal of moving up one category on each question, which was what started off my weight loss – a stone in the first three months. Since then, my nutrition habits in particularly have slipped, and when I just retook the quiz I got plus 3. At least I haven’t completely gone back to where I was at, mainly because I get more exercise now than I did then, even if it isn’t consistent, and watch less TV.

I’m going to set myself the same goals this time – over the next three months I aim to improve at least one score on each question where I wasn’t in the top category to start with. Restriction doesn’t work well for me, so I will go back to what did, adding in positive behaviours rather than removing negative ones.

  1. Go from between 150 and 300 mins exercise per week to over 300 mins exercise per week.
  2. Go from watching 5 to 10 hours of television a week to less than 5 hours.
  3. Go from eating a green leafy salad less than three days per week to between three and five days a week.
  4. Go from three to six servings of fruit and veg daily to over seven.
  5. Go from eating omega-3-rich foods once or twice a week to three times a week or more.
  6. And finally, start managing my stress in any way other than feeding it, and ideally by doing something physical.

So that’s just six areas to work on over the next three months. I will keep you posted.

My score was 0… I’m sure the lack of exercise was a major downgrade, plus the eating yummy treats to handle stress, sigh.

I’m not so bad on some of the others… I sure eat salads and around six servings of veg a day. Some days more, but since it isn’t every day, I rated myself conservatively. And I eat omega-3 rich foods.

Consistency is my big fall-down as well. That and a big appetite!
