Valentine’s Pizza

February 15, 2009 at 1:02 pm 1 comment

About ten days ago or so, hubby and I were watching something on television and there was a pizza involved. Hubby started salivating about the pizzas made by our local takeaway, and more importantly, the world-class wedges they also do. We haven’t had takeaway in absolutely ages. We’ve been making a concerted effort to cook every night, or to make sure there is stuff in the freezer for when we really, really can’t be bothered. So, brownie points to us then. Anyway, since my weight loss was doing so well, I suggested that maybe we could order pizza for a one-off special occasion, as a treat. With Valentine’s Day coming up, we decided that that would be the special occasion – instead of going out or cooking, we would order pizza, and wedges of course, eat them off plates at the table, instead of out of the boxes in front of the TV, with wine, music, and candlelight.

Right up until yesterday morning, when I was telling a friend about it over the telephone I was actually looking forward to it, but later in the day, when push came to shove, I decided I didn’t actually want fast food. I would rather eat healthy. Not because I felt I should, but I genuinely preferred the idea. So we decided instead to do home-made. As it was supermarket day we simply bought pizza bases (I have made my own in the past, but can rarely be bothered these days) and trimmings, and a sweet potato for the wedges. And here is our menu:

BBG’s pizza: base, spread with tomato paste, generously sprinkled with oregano, basil and garlic powder, topped with mushrooms, sliced zucchini (courgette), red bell pepper, a little frozen spinach, defrosted, topped with admittedly a generous serving of shredded light cheddar and mozzarella, and then pineapple chunks on top of that.

Hubby’s meat lover’s spicy pizza: base, spread with tomato paste, oregano, basil, onion, mushroom, red bell pepper, pepperoni, chorizo, tabasco and cheese (regular).

It was absolutely lovely, the sweet potato wedges were divine (done in the Actifry – I’ll write a post about this wonderful gadget at some point), and a nice glass of pinot grigot to finish it all off. Plus, I have half a pizza left over for lunches this week. While at the end of the day these may not have been the super-healthiest pizzas in the land, they were still probably better than what we would have got from the takeaway. And it is kind of fun making your own pizza. And simple. Why not try it this week?

And it all seemed worth it when, on official weigh day today, although up half a pound on yesterday, I was still down a pound on last week’s weigh in. I have also started a new fitness regime this week, having followed the previous one for four weeks, but I will write more about this later in the week.
