Chocolate for hypertension – Yippee!

Hubby spotted this one in a magazine and mentioned it to me. Apparently, dark chocolate can help reduce blood pressure. I checked it out and there are now randomised clinical trials proving it. The polyphenols in cocoa can reduce blood pressure, improve the function of your blood vessels, reduce insulin resistance and lower total and bad cholesterol! You don’t need much to have an effect – one study used just 6 grams a day, but higher doses seem to have a larger effect. And sugar appears to reduce the health benefits, so you have to go for the unsweetened kind. For the more scientifically minded amongst you, here are a couple of recent studies on the subject published in the Journal of Nutrition and the Journal of the American Medical Association. One chunk a day along with my multivits then. And extra cuddles for hubby.

Finally braced myself to do an interval workout today. It’s sooo hard, but I felt good when it was done. 5.0 RU again, despite still being a bit chesty, so I was quite pleased with that. Plus, hubby cooked dinner while I did my workout which seemed like a fair exchange. Down another pound this morning.

Oh, and I nearly forgot. Took a salad to work today for lunch. Wasn’t massively leafy – watercress, sugar snap peas, dried apricots, butter beans and toasted almonds, with a little dressing made from olive oil, balsamic vinegar, lemon juice and honey, but it ticked a few of the nutritional boxes, so eating goal for this week achieved. And still only Tuesday. Maybe I’ll try and squeeze in one more before the end of the week.
